REVIEW: The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy

Synopsis

They call themselves the May Mothers—a collection of new moms who gave birth in the same month. When the group’s members agree to meet for drinks at a hip local bar, they have in mind a casual evening of fun, a brief break from their daily routine. But on this sultry Fourth of July night during the hottest summer in Brooklyn’s history, something goes terrifyingly wrong: one of the babies is abducted from his crib. Winnie, a single mom, was reluctant to leave six-week-old Midas with a babysitter, but the May Mothers insisted that everything would be fine. Now Midas is missing, the police are asking disturbing questions, and Winnie’s very private life has become fodder for a ravenous media.

Though none of the other members in the group are close to the reserved Winnie, three of them will go to increasingly risky lengths to help her find her son. And as the police bungle the investigation and the media begin to scrutinize the mothers in the days that follow, damaging secrets are exposed, marriages are tested, and friendships are formed and fractured. Review

I was immediately drawn to this book when I saw that Cristin Milioti was the narrator of the audiobook, I think she is a fantastic actress and I love her voice. The book itself was did not disappoint but was not quite as thrilling as I think I expected based on the buzz and summary of the book.

Don't get me wrong, The Perfect Mother is a very enjoyable and entertaining book but as a psychological thriller it did not quite deliver. There was a certain lack of urgency for Midas and his situation that I believe stemmed from the admissions of the unidentified 'Mother' in the first chapter. She makes it clear the whole situation comes to a full resolution so whenever Molloy attempted to up the stakes later on in the book it feels so clearly like a red herring that it really didn't even phase me.

The main element that did keep me enthralled was the identity of the mother from the first chapter. On my first listen I thought I knew who it was and ended up being completely incorrect and the true identity genuinely surprised me. Even when I did feel very certain that I knew who it was Molloy kept up a steady stream of evidence both pointing towards and away from this person that I still had doubts. The Perfect Mother is a great 'cotton-candy' read, there isn't a lot of nutritional value to it but you keep returning and the experience every time.
